This tutorial demonstrates how to find a book when you know the title, using the Pfau Library Catalog.

Begin at Pfau Library's home page. You'll find the link to the Pfau Library Catalog below "Find Books."

Your professor has recommended a book to you for your research paper. The title of the book is "The Story of Stupidity." Does the library have it?

In the Catalog, the default search option is "Keyword." Change it by using the pull-down menu. Choose the option "Title," then type "story of stupidity" in the box and run the search.

Here it is! The library does have it. This book is shelved on the 3rd Floor of the library. You'll need the call number (D10.W44 1988) to locate it on the shelf. "Available" means the book is not checked out to anyone else.

(Want to learn how to find your book with the call number? Check the OLLIE tutorial: "Locate a Book on the Shelf.")

But what if your title has more than one match? Let's look for the book "Aliens in America." Just change your search in the box at the top of the page.

Two titles matched our search. To find out more, click on a title. I'll pick the second one. On its it record page, I can tell that it is a book by author Jodi Dean.

Another option: Back at the results list, click "Extended Display" to view more about each book on the list. Now I can see that the first one is an audio recording (the text label for its icon is "sound recording") by Sandra Tsing Loh, and the second one is a book (the text label for its icon is "printed work") by Jodi Dean.

Summing up:

  1. Change your search from Keyword to Title
  2. Record location and call number of book so you can retrieve it
  3. If you get more than one match, click each title, or use "Extended Display"

You've reached the end of this tutorial lesson.
