Finding Articles on the Shelf.

While doing a search in one of the library's databases, you find two articles you want that are not online. You learn that one of them is in Current Periodicals and the other one is in Bound Periodicals. This means that printed, paper issues are available in the Periodicals section of the library on the 3rd floor. Here's how you find them...

Write down the information that identifies the article (also known as a citation or reference). The first one is:

Valdez, Lidio M. "Maize Beer Production in Middle Horizon Peru." Journal of Anthropological Research, Spring 2006, volume 62, issue 1, pages 53 - 80.

The second one is:

Sarra, Simone. "Cognitive Types of Smiles and Laughter in Preschool Children." Psychological Reports, December 2001, volume 88, issue 3, page 547.

Take the elevator to the 3rd floor. Let's find the article in Current Periodicals first.

When you get out of the elevator, turn left. Turn left again and go behind the elevators. Look alphabetically for the journal title; in this case, that's Journal of Anthropological Research.

Find the row for titles that begin with "J." (Look for the labels on the end of each row of shelves.) Then find your specific title in order on that shelf. Now find the matching volume number and issue number; in this case, that's volume 21, issue 1. This information is listed on the spine or cover of each issue. Then find your article in order by page number; our article starts on page 53. You can either photocopy the article or check out the issue for a week.

Now let's find the other article, which is in the Bound Periodicals section. As a reminder, that's: Sarra, Simone. "Cognitive Types of Smiles and Laughter in Preschool Children." Psychological Reports, December 2001, volume 88, issue 3, page 547.

When you get out of the elevator, turn left. The Bound Periodicals section will be in front of you. Again, look alphabetically for the journal title; in this case, Psychological Reports. Again, look for the letter labels on the ends of each row. This is a large section, so we need to go further down the aisle until we get to the row for "P." Here is the title "Psychological Bulletin," so we are getting closer. Now we have found "Psychological Reports." Look for the matching year and volume number; in this case, volume 88, year 2001. Volume numbers and years are printed on the spines of the bound periodicals. Once we find volume 88, we open it up to the correct issue and page number (issue 3, page 547). Photocopy your article. Bound periodicals can't be checked out. Leave the journal on a nearby table for reshelving by library staff.

The End.
