About the Library.
The library was named in honor of Dr. John M. Pfau, CSUSB's first president. "Pfau" is the German word for "peacock." "Pfau" rhymes with "now." Ignore the "p" at the beginning.
The Pfau Library is the first large building you see when you drive onto campus. A drive-by book drop is located at the main campus entrance. There are two more book drops inside the library, one at front entrance and one at the back entrance. And one more that may be used from outside the building, on the northeast corner.
The library and its contents are here for use by all CSUSB students, faculty, and staff as well as members of the community. So when you come to the library, please keep a few things in mind. We need your help to keep the library and its contents clean. No food or drink, and no smoking inside the library.
We also need your help to make the library a quiet place for research and study. Turn off cell phones inside the library. By student request, the 5th floor of the library is the completely quiet zone for individual study. Group study rooms (for 2 or more people) are available on the 3rd and 4th floors of the library on a first-come, first-served basis.
Please, never write in the books, magazines, or journals, or use a highlighter in them, and do not fold, cut, or tear pages. The library computers are only for research or class-related activities.
The library computers are only for research or class-related activities. There is no application software (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) on them. You can print from the library's computers. Print jobs appear on the monitor with the purple screen at the Reference Desk. Printing is eleven cents per page. Put money on your student ID card or purchase a copycard from the "card value" machine near the Reference Desk. If you need to check your email, type a paper, etc., go to the computer lab in the "Wedge." Use the main entrance to the Wedge (which is not the same as the library entrance!) and go to room 1109, which is on your left as you enter. You will need to show a student ID card in order to use the lab.
If you have a laptop with a wireless network card installed, you can connect to the wireless network in the library.
If your professor has put something in the library for your class, it will be at the Reserves Desk on the 1st floor. You must have a student ID check things out from the Reserves Desk.
Don't confuse the Reserves Desk with the Reference Desk, which also is on the 1st floor! The Reference Desk is where you go to get help with your research.
To check out a book, a current periodical, or any other library materials, go to the Circulation Desk on the 1st floor. Your student ID is required here, too.
The Pfau Library Web Page: The library's home page is www.lib.csusb.edu. The main phone number, as shown on the library's home page, is 909-537-5090. Is the library open? Find out under the "Hours and Directions" link from the home page. The "Pfau Library Catalog" search finds books (not articles) on your topic. Anyone may use this search. But you must have a current student ID number to get into the library's databases from home. The databases are listed under the "Articles and Journals" category. You also need a current student ID to access the electronic reserves; these are listed under "Course Reserves." When you go to the library's web site and select something that requires a student ID, you will be prompted to enter the number from the front of your ID card and your last name without any capital letters.
The End.
