Finding Documents:
There are millions of documents in the Federal Depository Library Program; over 100,000 are available full text via the web.  Beginning in June 2000 Pfau Library will catalog electronic, print, and microform documents in our OPAC as they are released.  Other resources for finding Federal Government information by subject:

  • Browse Electronic Titles (maintained by the U.S. Government Printing Office)
Offers subject bibliographies of electronic Federal Government publications.
  • Catalog of U.S. Government Publications (maintained by the U.S. Government Printing Office)
Catalogs all publications (print and electronic) distributed through the Federal Depository Library Program since 1994.
  • Hotbot (maintained by Lycos Inc.)
In the Advanced Search option it is possible to limit by location / domain.  Limiting to .gov (government) or .mil (military) sites is one way to find information published by the Federal Government.
  • Notable Documents in Electronic Format.
Award-winning electronic government documents on every subject.
  • Topical Index from the Office of Educational Research and Improvement
Index links to full text publications on education. (The link is usually to the sponsoring agency, not to the publication itself.  Follow the link, then search the sponsoring agency site for the publication.)
  • AskERIC InfoGuide Archive
Links to web information guides.  These guides support teachers in a variety of ways.  Some offer links to documents that could be useful for developing lesson plans, many offer listserv addresses to facilitate communication between teachers.
  • ERIC Sites
The Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC), funded by the Office of Educational Research and Improvement (OERI), is a nationwide information network that acquires, catalogs, summarizes, and provides access to education information from all sources.  This site provides links to the subject-based clearing houses, each of which has further links to web resources.

Resources for information on colleges and universities:
If you are not sure what colleges might be of interest, IPEDS COOL has the tool to help you search for a college. You can search for a college based on its location, program, or degree offerings either alone or in combination. The more criteria you specify, the smaller the number of colleges that will fit your criteria. Once you're found some colleges of interest, you can obtain important and understandable information and on all of them.

Resources for Researchers: (Finding journal articles and Education Dept. documents)
ERIC Sponsored Internet Access to ERIC databases
Choose your software and search ERIC.  (If you would like to use software that includes a well developed and flexible search engine that supports both complex and simple searches, and that allows you to develope your search strategy though reusing and recombining past searches; then use the Pfau Library's ERIC subscription.)  The ERIC database indexes two different types of documents:

Document Type
Easiest way to tell whether publication is a journal article or ERIC doc. look at the AN field (first field in the record).
Get the full text by:
Journal Article EJ# Go to the journal (check to see if
Pfau Library has it - check the journal
title (in the SO field) in the WebPac
Use Interlibrary Loan if Pfau does
not have the journal.
ERIC Document ED# 99% of the documents are in a microfiche
set on the first floor of the Pfau Library.
It is organized by ED#.

Research Reports from the National Research and Development Centers
Limited number of reports (600) from Research and Development Centers.  Reports are searchable and are also classified by subject.

Pfau Library subscribes to several databases that are useful for research in the field of Education.  They can be used from within the Pfau Library.  Off campus use via the proxy server is available for current students, faculty, and staff.
