Collections & Exhibitions
Federal Collections

  • Collection of the National Gallery of Art
    Text and/or data on all of the more than 108,000 objects in the National Gallery's collection can be found using various search capabilities. Images of more than 5,600 objects in the collection and approximately 11,800 related details are available.

  • General Services Administration's (GSA) Fine Arts Database
    The Fine Arts Collection of the GSA includes works of art commissioned to enhance the architecture of federal buildings. The collection consists of over 17,000 paintings, sculpture, architectural or environmental works of art, and graphics dating from the 1850's.
  • Smithsonian: Art & Design
    Explore the art collections and exhibitions of the Smithsonian Museums. Collections are grouped by artist, field, and region & culture.
  • National Archives: A New Deal for the Arts
    During the depths of the Great Depression of the 1930s and into the early years of World War II, the Federal government supported the arts in unprecedented ways. For 11 years, between 1933 and 1943, federal tax dollars employed artists, musicians, actors, writers, photographers, and dancers. Never before or since has our government so extensively sponsored the arts.

  • Library of Congress: Prints & Photographs Division
    Unique in their scope and richness, the prints and photographs collections today number more than 13.7 million images. These include photographs, fine and popular prints and drawings, posters, and architectural and engineering drawings. While international in scope, the collections are particularly rich in materials produced in, or documenting the history of, the United States and the lives, interests and achievements of the American people.

  • Library of Congress: Exhibitions
    The Library of Congress provides access to a number of online exhibits that deal directly with, or tangentially with the arts.

  • American Music Collections of the National Museum of American History
    The American Music Collections document this country's diverse popular music and performance traditions. The strength of these collections is the music of the late nineteenth through the twentieth centuries including Big Band jazz, Gospel and African American sacred music, and folk music.

California State & Local Collections

  • Los Angeles County Museum of Art: Collections Online

    "The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is the largest art museum west of the Mississippi River. More than 100,000 objects constitute the museum's holdings. The permanent collections offer: American art; ancient and Islamic art; Chinese and Korean art; costume and textiles; decorative arts; European painting and sculpture; Japanese art; Latin American art; modern and contemporary art; photography; prints and drawings; and, South and Southeast Asian art."

  • Index of Early California & Western Art
    From the digital library of the California State Museum Resource Center, a digital reproduction of the Nan & Roy Farrington Jones Collection, an accumulation of over 20,000 slides of historic California and western genre paintings. The index is arranged by artist last name and includes brief artist biographical information, where available. The collection also includes manuscripts and publications.
  • UCR / California Museum of Photography: Exhibitions
    UCR / California Museum of Photography is an off-campus department of the University of California, Riverside, Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. The museum promotes understanding of photography and related media through collection, research, exhibition, and instruction. UCR / CMP is vitally concerned with the intersection of photography, new imaging media and society.

  • Wired For Books: Author Interviews by Don Swaim
    Ohio University Telecommunications Center has made publicly available its archive of author interviews by Doug Swaim. "Listen to the voices of many of the best writers of the English language. These uncut, behind-the-scenes interviews were the foundation of Don Swaim's long-running CBS Radio show, Book Beat." Requires RealPlayer.
  • Folger Shakespeare Library: Exhibitions
    A magnet for scholars from around the globe, the Folger is home to the world�s largest collection of Shakespeare�s printed works, as well as magnificent collections of other rare Renaissance books and manuscripts on all disciplines�history and politics, theology and exploration, law and the arts. Included in the collections are over 310,000 books and manuscripts; 250,000 playbills; 27,000 paintings, drawings, engravings, and prints; and musical instruments, costumes, and films.

Federal Resources

  • National Endowment for the Arts (NEA): Grants
    Established by Congress in 1965 as an independent agency of the federal government, the Endowment is the nation's largest annual funder of the arts, bringing great art to all 50 states, including rural areas, inner cities, and military bases.
  • National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH): Apply for a Grant
    NEH is an independent grant-making agency of the United States government dedicated to supporting research, education, preservation, and public programs in the humanities.
  • Dept. of Education: Arts in Education Model Development and Dissemination Grants Program
    Grants are designed to enable local education agencies and organizations with art expertise to further create and develop materials for the replication or adaptation of current comprehensive approaches for integrating a range of arts disciplines--such as music, dance, theater, and visual arts, including folk arts--into the elementary and middle school curricula.
  • Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS): All About Grants and Awards
    The Institute of Museum and Library Services is an independent federal agency that fosters leadership, innovation and a lifetime of learning. IMLS supports all types of museums, from art and history to science and zoos, and all types of libraries and archives, from public and academic to research and school. IMLS expands the educational benefit of these institutions by encouraging partnerships.


California State Resources

  • California Arts Council (CAC): Grant Programs
    Through grant awards to artists, nonprofit arts organizations, and local governments, the California Arts Council furthers the legislative mandates and the mission of the agency. Grant awards help to support artistic programming, strengthen internal management, assist in the employment of professional staff and artists, and provide access to the arts for all Californians.
  • California Arts Council (CAC): Funding Opportunities
    CAC provides a list of resources "linking artists and arts organizations to a variety of arts funding sources from governments, foundations and private sources."
  • California State Library: California Cultural and Historic Endowment
    The Endowment was created to administer the Proposition 40 funds dedicated to preserving historic and cultural resources. Approximately $128 million will be available to government entities and non-profit organizations through a competitive grant application process.


Local Resources

  • The Community Foundation: Available Grants
    The Community Foundation "is dedicated to strengthening our communities by meeting the needs and enhancing the lives of individuals in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties in partnership with philanthropic individuals, community leaders, and the nonprofit sector. This is accomplished through building permanent endowments, making prudent grants for charitable causes, being a catalyst to solve community concerns, and strengthening nonprofit organizations."
  • Los Angeles County Arts Commission: Funding Opportunities
    The Los Angeles County Arts Commission was established in 1947 to foster excellence, diversity, vitality and accessibility of the arts of the County of Los Angeles. The Commission plays a leadership role in cultural services for the County, providing information and resources to the community, artists, arts organizations and municipalities. The administration of grant programs is an essential component of this mandate.
