Linking to Pfau Library Online Resources

If you teach an online course at CSUSB, or you use a web page to support a conventional course, you can provide links to online library resources for your students. Any subscription-based library resource (such as a journal, article, or database) can be linked so long as:

  1. It has a durable or "persistent" URL
  2. The link includes the library's proxy information

Creating Links

Durable URL's: Be wary about copying the web address displayed in your broswer's toolbar; this address is sometimes session-specific and will expire in hours or days. See the instructions below for complete details about finding a durable URL.

Proxy Information: For off-campus access, all URL's for subscription-based resources must include a prefix that routes the user through the library's proxy server. If this prefix is missing, students will not be able to log-in the resource from home. Students need their Coyote ID number to access these items from home. Please note that even if a student is logged into Blackboard, they still must log-in to library resources.

The prefix is:   http://libproxy.lib.csusb.edu/login?url=

Any URL with the proxy prefix attached will have two "http" elements within it. This is required for the URL to work. A correctly prefixed URL will look something like this: http://libproxy.lib.csusb.edu/login?url=http://www.something.com/whatever.htm

If a resource is available on the web for free, do not provide the proxy information in the link. If in doubt, contact Stacy Magedanz.

If you want to provide online access to a short item (such as an article or book chapter) that is not currently available in electronic format, the library can scan the item and place it in the Electronic Course Reserves for the quarter. For more information, please see the Electronic Reserves information page, or contact Sylvia Cardenas, x75090 or x73471.

You can also create a link to your course's Electronic Reserves.

For assistance creating links or for any questions about linking to library resources, please contact Stacy Magedanz, magedanz@csusb.edu, x75103.

Create a Link to a Library Database:

Example: PsycINFO Database

  1. Locate the database link on Pfau Library's List of All Databases.
  2. Right-click on the link and choose "Copy shortcut" (Internet Explorer) or "Copy link location" (Mozilla/Firefox).
  3. Paste the link into your web page. These links already include the library's proxy prefix.

Create a Link to a Specific Journal:

Example: Journal of Medical Systems

To create a link to an online journal:

  1. Go to the Online Journals List.
  2. Look up the title of the journal you want, or browse by subject matter.
  3. Once you have located the title you need, the list will indicate what dates are available and provide a link to the journal.*
  4. Right-click on the link and choose "Copy shortcut" (Internet Explorer) or "Copy link location" (Mozilla/Firefox).
  5. Paste the link into your web page. These links already include the library's proxy prefix.

*PLEASE NOTE: Unfortunately, due to technical limitations, it is not possible to link directly to journals appearing in Factiva or Lexis-Nexis.

Create a Link to a Specific Article or Other Data:

Example: Diane Pecorari, "Good and original: Plagiarism and patchwriting in academic second-language writing." Journal of Second Language Writing, Vol. 12, No. 4, December 2003, pp. 317-345.
Example: Company Financial Record, Walt Disney Co.
Example: Mozart Symphony No. 40, Movement 1 (molto allegro)

Instructions for:

ACS Publications, Britannica Online, CountryWatch, Emerald Library, Oxford Art, Oxford Music, IEEE Computer Society, Literature Resource Center, Mergent Online, MUSE, Oxford English Dictionary, Oxford Journals, Scitation:

(NOTE: For ACS Publications, please link to only the PDF version of the article; links to HTML full text may not work.)

  1. Display the page or document you wish to link to.
  2. Copy the URL that appears in the "Location" or "Address" box on your web browser.
  3. Paste the URL into your web page.
  4. Then add the library's "proxy" prefix to the URL: http://libproxy.lib.csusb.edu/login?url= This prefix allows students to access to the article from home. The prefix must go in front of the article URL, with no spaces between them.

Instructions for ACM Digital Library and Wiley Interscience:

You cannot link directly to the PDF full text of a Wiley or ACM article; however, you can link to the abstract page and instruct students to click on the link for the PDF file that appears on the abstract page.

  1. Display the abstract for the article on your screen (NOT the PDF full text).

Instructions for AP Images

You cannot link to photos within AP Images, but you may save copies of the photos and upload them to Blackboard pages. In such a case, no proxy prefix is needed. Graphics from AP Images may be used only on pages that are restricted to current CSUSB users, such as Blackboard course pages. If your web page is publicly accessible, do not post AP Images graphics on it!

Instructions for Classical Music Library:

  1. Do a search and view  the resulting list of tracks.
  2. Below the track(s) you want, click the yellow button that says "View Static URL's."
  3. Copy and paste the URL into your web page.
  4. Then add the library's "proxy" prefix to the URL: http://libproxy.lib.csusb.edu/login?url= This prefix allows students to access to the article from home. The prefix must go in front of the URL, with no spaces between them.

Please note: Instruct students to click the yellow "play" button to begin actual playback of the track. Requires Flash player.

You may also create a stable folder with "playlists" for your course. To set up a course folder, please contact Stacy Magedanz magedanz@csusb.edu or x75103.

Instructions for EBSCOhost-platform databases:

The EBSCOhost platform includes the following databases:

  • Business Source Premier
  • CINAHL
  • Communication and Mass Media
  • EBSCOhost (Academic Search Premier)
  • MAS Ultra
  • Military and Government
  • MLA
  • Primary Search
  • PsycARTICLES
  • PsycINFO
  1. Click on the article title to display the citation and abstract.
  2. Below the abstract is a field labeled "Persistent Link to this Record."
  3. Copy the URL given in this field and paste it into your web page. This URL will already include the library's proxy prefix.

Please note: DO NOT copy the URL in the "Address" or "Location" box on your browser! That URL is not stable and will expire after a short period. (This is true of EBSCOhost PDF files as well: DO NOT display the PDF version of the article and then copy the address from your browser!) Use only the "Persistent Link" for EBSCOhost databases.

Instructions for Factiva:

At this time, Factiva does not offer durable URL's, making it impossible to link to individual articles or journal titles within it.

It appears that the method formerly outlined here for linking to Factiva articles has stopped working. If a new method appears, I will post it here.

Instructions for JSTOR:

  1. From your list of results, click on the PDF link for any article.
  2. Copy the URL that appears in the "Location" or "Address" box on your web browser, and paste the URL into your web page.
  3. Then add the library's "proxy" prefix to the URL: http://libproxy.lib.csusb.edu/login?url= This prefix allows students to access to the article from home. The prefix must go in front of the article URL, with no spaces between them.
  • You will also see a URL labeled Stable URL on various JSTOR pages. It looks like this: http://www.jstor.org/stable/3299291 You may use this link, but it does not connect directly to the PDF file.

Instructions for Lexis-Nexis:

As of September 2006, it is now possible to construct stable links to most Lexis-Nexis articles. Let me know which article you want to link to, and I will send you a stable URL; magedanz@csusb.edu or x75103.

DO NOT copy the URL in the "Address" or "Location" box on your browser when viewing a Lexis-Nexis article. That URL is not stable and will expire after a short period.

Netlibrary:

Linking to Netlibrary books is NOT recommended. Only one person at a time--specifically, one person from the entire CSU system, not just from our campus--can use a Netlibrary book. "Usage" lasts for 15 minutes from the last time the user loaded a page from the book. This makes Netlibrary books unsuitable for use by a whole class.

Instructions for ProQuest-platform databases:

Applies to ABI/INFORM and Newsstand.

  1. Click on "Abstract" to display the citation and abstract screen.
  2. Above the abstract  is a field labeled "Document URL." (If you don't see "Document URL,"  click "Copy Link," found at the top of the page.)
  3. Copy the URL given in this field and paste it into your web page. This URL will already include the library's proxy prefix.

Instructions for Safari Tech Books Online:

Instructors may post links for no more than two sections of a Safari Tech Book.

  1. Display the section of the book you want to link to.
  2. Scroll down to the end of the book text and look for the URL provided.
  3. Copy and paste this URL into your web page.
  4. Then add the library's "proxy" prefix to the URL: http://libproxy.lib.csusb.edu/login?url= This prefix allows students to access to the article from home. The prefix must go in front of the URL, with no spaces between them.

Instructions for Sage Journals Online:

  1. Display the full text of the article you wish to link to.

Note: This method will display the PDF full text in a framed web page. Example:

http://libproxy.lib.csusb.edu/login?url=http://jiv.sagepub.com/cgi/reprint/19/5/576

To link directly to the PDF file itself, without frames, add .pdf to the end of the URL. Example:

http://libproxy.lib.csusb.edu/login?url=http://jiv.sagepub.com/cgi/reprint/19/5/576.pdf

Instructions for ScienceDirect:

This option will link to the citation/abstract page for the article. Students must then click on the "PDF" or "Full-Text+Links" tabs to retrieve the full article.

  1. Run a search for your article(s) within ScienceDirect.
  2. From the results, click on SummaryPlus.*
  3. Just above the article title, and just under the tabs for "SummaryPlus" & "PDF," look for a link that begins with "doi:..."
    Example: doi:10.1016/j.jas.2006.10.032
  4. Right-click on the "doi" link and choose "Copy shortcut" (Internet Explorer) or "Copy link location" (Mozilla/Firefox).
  5. Paste the URL into your web page.
  6. Then add the library's "proxy" prefix to the URL: http://libproxy.lib.csusb.edu/login?url= This prefix allows students to access electronic books or journals from home. The prefix must go in front of the URL, with no spaces between them.

*A few journals may use the term "Abstract" instead. In such a case, please make sure the article actually has the full text available.

Example of a correct link: http://libproxy.lib.csusb.edu/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jas.2006.10.032

Instructions for SpringerLink:

This option will link to the citation/abstract page for the article. Students must then click on the "Open Full Text" button to retrieve the article. Links to the PDF file itself are not stable.

  1. From the list of article titles, click on the desired title to display the abstract and references.
  2. Links to the full-text usually appear at the right side of the page (you may need to scroll down). Click on the link for either "PDF" or "HTML" to display the full article.
  3. Copy the URL that appears in the "Location" or "Address" box on your web browser.
  4. Paste the URL into your web page.
  5. Then add the library's "proxy" prefix to the URL: http://libproxy.lib.csusb.edu/login?url= This prefix allows students to access electronic books or journals from home. The prefix must go in front of the URL, with no spaces between them.

Instructions for Wilson OmniFile:

  1. From the list of results, click on the title of a full text article.
  2. On the citation/abstract screen, look for the field "Persistent URL. It will have links that say "Click here to copy the full text HMTL article link" or "Click here to copy the full text PDF article link."
  3. Click on the link; a box will appear with the article URL. Copy the URL as directed.
  4. Paste the URL into your web page.
  5. Then add the library's "proxy" prefix to the URL: http://libproxy.lib.csusb.edu/login?url= This prefix allows students to access to the article from home. The prefix must go in front of the article URL, with no spaces between them.

  3. When the results list appears, copy the URL found in the "Location" or "Address" box on your web browser. Paste this URL  into your web page.
  4. Do not add the proxy prefix, it is not needed in this case.

Create a link to a catalog record

  1. Go to the Pfau Library Catalog
  2. Run any kind of search (keywords, author, title, subject, etc.).
  3. When the results list appears, click on the title of the desired item to view the full record.

Create a link to a "Databases by Subject" guide

The library offers several guides to library resources by subject area. These include subscription resources from the library as well as links to helpful free web sites.

  1. Select from the "By Subject" menu on the library's Find Articles & Journals page.
  2. Display the guide you want, then copy the URL found in the "Location" or "Address" box on your web browser.
  3. Paste this URL into your web page. Do not add the proxy prefix, it is not needed in this case.

Create a link to the library tutorial (OLLIE)

The library offers an online tutorial, called OLLIE, as a basic, freshman-level introduction to the library. Right-click to copy link for OLLIE Main Page. No proxy prefix is required for this link.
