What is Interlibrary Loan & How to Use it?

The interlibrary loan (ILL) service enables our faculty, students, and staff to borrow materials that are not owned by the Pfau Library or material which is listed as lost from the Library. The ILL service borrows the materials from other CSU libraries, UC libraries and other sources.

The service is usually free to eligible borrowers. In case we must borrow from a lender that charges a fee, the ILL department will contact you before processing the request. You will need to indicate on the form the amount of charges you are willing to pay.

Who can use it?

Only current CSUSB students, faculty and staff may use ILLiad.

How long does it take?

The delivery time of the ILL items is tied to the lending library's procedures and availability of materials. Please allow 1-2 weeks for receipt of material.

How much does it cost?

Use of the interlibrary service is free to CSUSB students, staff, and faculty. Alumni and Library Associates pay $5.00 per filled request plus any charges assessed by the library lending the material. In addition, Alumni and Library Associates will need to fill out an ILL paper request form which is available at the Reference Desk, first floor of the library.

Copyright Law of the United States Title 17, United States Code

The Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use", that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order, if in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.

By selecting one of the Request Forms above, you are agreeing to the Interlibrary Loan Policies.

How to Request Dissertations?

A request can be submitted for a dissertation. The dissertation itself is a book-length manuscript (often over 100 pages in length) written by a student to fulfill the requirements of a PhD degree. If the lending library has a second copy, they may lend it. Dissertations are also available through UMI's dissertation services.

Search Dissertations Online

You can search the ProQuest Digital Dissertation Database for free (citations and abstracts for the past 2 years only).
