an early age. He obtained his A.B. from the University of Chicago in 1947,
his A.M. there in 1948, and his Ph.D. in 1951, specializing in American
History. He accepted a position as Associate Professor of History at Northeastern
Illinois State College in 1951. In 1959 he became Chair of the Department
of Social Sciences and Professor of History at Chico State College, moving
to Sonoma State College in 1961. On 1 October 1962 he accepted a position
as Founding President of California State College, San Bernardino, serving
in that capacity until his retirement in July of 1982. During his almost
twenty years at CSUSB, Dr. Pfau presided over the official opening of
the campus (1965), and saw the school expand from a few hundred students
in its first year of operation (1965/66) to over 4000 in the 1980s. He
and his wife, Antreen, have been frequent visitors to the campus since
his retirement, and were present at the celebration of the University's
35th anniversary in September 2000. The Pfaus currently live in the wine
country of Northern California. |
