Library Instruction: 200 Courses and Above

Option 1: Online Library Instruction Experience OLLIE
OLLIE is a self-paced suite of online tutorials that teaches basic library skills. This instruction option is best for introductory courses and for students who need a refresher in basic skills. These tutorials cover the following topics:

About the Library
Choosing a Topic
Choosing Keywords
What are Scholarly Journals?
Find Articles in a Database
Use "Search for Full Text"
Find a Book by Topic
Find a Book by Author
Find a Book by Title
Locate a Book on the Shelf

Students can access OLLIE on campus or off. You can assign all the tutorials at once or spread them out across the quarter to complement course work. The optional OLLIE test—which can be uploaded to your Blackboard course—assesses your students' understanding of basic skills after completion of all of the tutorials. To upload the OLLIE test, fill out the OLLIE to Blackboard request.

Option 2: Library Resources for Your Blackboard Course

You may request a customized resource page for your Blackboard course. This is the preferred option if you want to incorporate library instructional resources into your course. It's quick and easy for you, and it's convenient for your students. You simply upload a zip file to your course, and your students have instant access to research materials chosen especially for your class. You have several options for the content of the page: research guides in your discipline, database instructions, webliographies, and more. Contact Barbara Quarton to arrange this.

Option 3: Instruction in Your Smart Classroom

You may make an appointment for a librarian to lecture in your smart classroom. This instruction option is ideal for (but not limited to) classes of more than 24 students. It is also the preferred option if you don't have time to walk with your students to the library and/or your students don't need "hands-on" time with the online resources. Requirements:

  • You must schedule the class at least 7 days in advance.
  • Either you or your TA must be present in the classroom.
  • You must confirm that the technology in your classroom is on and in working order on the day of the research class.

Option 4: Instruction in the Library's Lab

You may request class instruction in our 24-station lab. Because the budget situation has resulted in a shortage of librarians, we ask that you only choose this instruction option if your class assignment is complex and you are interested in an active learning experience with an opportunity for "hands-on" research practice. Requirements:

  • You must schedule the class at least 7 days in advance.
  • Either you or your TA must accompany your students to the class.
  • You must send an electronic copy of your class assignment to the library before the day of the research class.
