Assistant/Work Study Job Descriptions:
- The following are general
job descriptions and are intended to describe some of the different
types of work which student assistants perform in the library. Each
job will be fully explained at the time of employment. Much of the work
is routine, but all the work is regarded as an important part of the
library operation.
- The following description
of each department within the library is designed to give you some idea
of what your duties will be when you are assigned to these departments.
Duties other than those listed may also be assigned.
Job Title
I. PUBLIC
SERVICES
Circulation
Department/Stack Maintenance
1. Staffing Circulation and Reserve Book desks;
charging-out and charging-in materials, answering phone.
2. Assisting in processing reserve books.
3. Assisting in servicing copying machines.
4. Shelving books and other library materials.
5. Assisting in stack maintenance - shelf reading,
clearing floors, inventory.
6. Assisting in shifting book collection when
necessary.
7. Assisting in the assembling of shelving.
8. Staffing south end desk. (Sorting library materials)
Special Skills

3. Accurate typing (for some positions).
Reference
Department
1. Processing and shelving annual reports, telephone
directories, and college catalogs.
2. Shelving reference books.
3. Updating loose-leaf reference materials.
4. Show library users how to login and navigate
through databases, print, download, etc.
5. Provide directional information regarding where
to obtain e-mail accounts, student identification cards, library cards,
etc.
6. Check and replace paper in printers.
7. Provide regular cleaning of computer monitors
and keyboards.
8. Maintain user documentation information located
in Reference department.

Interlibrary
Loan Department
1. Retrieve books and periodicals from other floors
for ILL requests.
2. Package books and photocopies for shipping.
3. Updating requests on OCLC.

Periodicals
Department
1. Staffing the periodicals service desk.
2. Shelving current periodicals, bound volumes
and newspapers.
3. Order missing pages for torn periodicals.
4. Assisting in stack maintenance - shelf reading,
clearing, inventory.
5. Assisting in shifting of periodicals collection
when necessary.
6. Maintaining departmental statistics.

1. Assist students, faculty, and other library
patrons of the Curriculum Lab with questions related to equipment and computer
hardware and software as well as assisting with general directional questions.
2. Curriculum Software Lab work involving checking
out software programs, record keeping and assisting patrons with software.
3. Shelf reading as necessary in consultation
with Circulation and assigned by Curriculum.
4. Photocopying of handouts and lists.
5. Bibliographic checking of booklists.
6. Referring complex or in-depth questions to
the Library Assistant or the Curriculum Librarian.

II. TECHNICAL
SERVICES
Acquisitions/Serials/Bookkeeping
Department

Cataloging
Department
1. Updating OPAC (online library system) holdings
and records.
2. Inputting added entries into OPAC.
3. OPAC maintenance/data entry.
4. Sorting and filing shelf list cards.
5. Bar coding books and materials.
Special Skills:
1. Accurate typing.
2. Attention to detailed work.
Processing
Department
1. Use of computer.
3. Type call number on spine labels and paste
labels on books.
4. Property stamp tops and bottoms of books, add
targets and date due slips.
5. Label all materials for all department locations.
6. Bindery - Assist in bindery shipment.
7. Upgrade all fragile materials including music.
8. Pinning periodicals.
9. Mend all books or library materials that require
mending.
Special Skills:
1. Accurate typing.
2. Ability to learn to operate different machines
used in mending books and binding periodicals, including current computer
system.
3. Physical strength for lifting and unpacking boxes.
III. AUTOMATION
SERVICES
Student
Assistant
1. Edit batch files and login scripts on PC�s
and Macintosh computers.
2. Install computers, replace hard drives, floppy,
CD-ROM, sound cards, etc.
3. Check Library terminals, network, LI Rooms
on daily basis.
4. Answer questions about printing problems, Word
Perfect, MS Word, Quattro Pro, MS-Windows.
5. Install new applications and fix software problems
that occur.
6. Assist in tracing network problems.
7. Provide documentation on new procedures as
systems are designed.
8. Maintain reports on completed tasks.
Knowledge or experience that
is helpful: Novell, MS-DOS, Windows for Workgroups, Windows 95,
Networking, TCP/IP, IPX, Macintosh OS, PC Components, basic electronics
IV. UNIVERSITY
LIBRARIAN'S OFFICE
1.
General clerical assistant to the University Librarian's Secretary and
the Clerical Assistant in the University Librarian's Office.
2. Typing correspondence, forms, envelopes, cards,
etc.
3. Filing
4. Photo Copying
5. Answering the phone and taking messages.
6. Running errands, delivering cross-campus mail.
7. Create new and maintain existing financial
spreadsheets.
8. Flexible - will work in other Library departments
when required.

Internships
Paid Reference internships
are available to graduate students in Library and Information Science
programs.
An internship in the John M.
Pfau Library at California State University, San Bernardino, is an experience
that will enrich your life and enhance your professional credibility.
As a student intern, you will work in tandem with professional librarians,
providing reference service to a diverse population in a busy academic
library.
Internships in the Pfau Library
range in length from one to three quarters. All interns meet regularly
with the supervising librarian. Meeting topics include:
Reference Desk duty includes
answering directional and research related questions from patrons in person
and by telephone. Providing one-on-one instruction in the use of electronic
resources is a special emphasis. Other duties are assigned as time permits.
Interns are considered part
of the reference team in the Pfau Library. Every effort is made to include
interns in reference meetings, bibliographic instruction sessions, and
professional development opportunities. The supervising librarian is available
to answer questions and provide feedback to interns as needed.
Hours are flexible and
negotiable (up to 20 hours per week). Day, evening, and weekend hours
are available.
